Our Story
It was in 1929 when the Yukich familyโs roots were first entrenched in the Swan Valley by a young Croatian who emigrated to Western Australia with a dream to start a vineyard. ย His name was Nikola Yukich.ย It began with small plantings on his property that expanded over time as the family increased its presence in this historic wine region.
The Yukich family acquired 117 acres off the Hardy family in 1989, which was part of the original Houghton estate. This became Oakover Wines. In 2019, when the family bought the neighbouring property and remaining landholdings of Houghton Wines, Nikola Estate was born.
Not only was the original property once again reunited, but so too were the rare, old grapevines that were first planted on this special patch of earth back in 1836.
Today, as Australiaโs second oldest winery, Nikola Estate meticulously crafts wines from these original grapevines.
This is a winery that is forged on tradition, embodying the knowledge and foresight that has been faithfully passed down through four generations of the Yukich family, caretakers of these historic vines.
Nikola Estate will continue to reveal the stories of these ancient grapevines through its world-class wine collection that is expressive of its unique provenance.
