Houghton Estate
IN THE BEGINNING
Houghton was established in 1836 by three British Army officers (Thomas Yule, Ninian Lowis and Richmond Houghton), just four years after the fledgling colony of Western Australia was founded. It was one of Australia's oldest operating wineries. The Swan Valley site's colourful history includes tales of pioneer Scots, bandits, and generations of wine making craftsmanship.
FIRST VINTAGE - 1895
The first commercial vintage, produced by Dr John Ferguson in 1859, was a modest 25 gallons. John Ferguson, a Scottish surgeon, purchased the property that year and became the first winemaker in 1863.
A FAMILY CONCERN - 1875
In 1875, Charles, the son of John Ferguson, took over the company.
A CLASSIC IS CREATED - 1922
In 1937, winemaker Jack Mann created Houghton White Burgundy.
MARKET LEADERS - 1937
No other winery had the breadth and diversity of Houghton wines, wines that highlight the best that Western Australia has to offer.
